Pineapple Express movie review
OK, I know what you’re thinking. You thinking, “Are you kidding me? Isn’t that a stoner movie?” No I’m not kidding you and yes it is a stoner movie. But whenever I saw a preview for this movie it looked funny. Add to that the fact that I saw Knocked Up (http://blogadoodle.org/double-dvd-day/) and enjoyed Seth Rogen’s performance, and I thought why the hell not. I mean nearly everyone has gone to school with guys like these, or was a guy like this.
So as I said, if you’re expecting a stoner movie, you will not be disappointing. But if you are expecting a movie that is 95 minutes of nothing but toking, munching and gibberish babbling you actually will be sadly disappointment. Sure this movie has all that, but what was surprising is that this movie actually had a plot. The story line was feasible and it was entertaining.
Seth Rogen plays Dale Denton, a process server who spends all day smoking weed and serving subpoenas. In the process of doing his job he witnesses a murder, which involved a dirty police officer and a drug lord who are in a drug war with a competing Asian drug cartel. When they realize they had a witness they go after him. Dale inadvertently gets his totally baked drug dealer Saul Sliver (James Franco) linked into it and now the two are running for their lives and becoming friends.
The crazy thing about this movie is that it’s actually enjoyable to watch. It’s written in manner that leads you to believe the writer is at least a semi-intelligent individual who also happens to smoke a lot of weed. The movie doesn’t drag and it actually stays on course. I laughed throughout the whole movie, and so did the other 5 people that were in the theater. Their antics and dialog is very reminiscent of every person you’ve known while they were stoned, or at least what you would expect them to say, (“Let’s get out of here, grab the snacks, food, fruit roll-ups.”) And there were definitely classic capable lines in the film. At one point Dale and Saul pass out in the car with talk radio on. When they come to, the car battery is dead and Saul says, “Dude, talk radio is so boring the car committed suicide.”
In another scene there is a fight scene between the cartels and this guy says, “War is upon you! Prepare to suck the cock of Karma.” Now tell me that’s not a slogan deserving of a T-shirt.
I also find it funny that Seth Rogen movies always have some reference to him and/or someone being Jewish. In one scene they describe him as looking Jewish. In another, Saul is talking to his supplier (Red) and Saul says, ” Hey is that the bong I got you in Israel?” “Yeah, the Bong-mitzvah” he replies.
At the end, I can honestly say that there was very little in this movie that made think, “Come on, that was just put in for no reason.” I enjoyed it and would even watch it again. I would recommend this movie to anyone that enjoys funny stoner movies. It was a good story.
